Leo Babauta of Zen Habits had a post recently about how dangerous it can be to compare ourselves to others – their possessions, their ideas, their actions. Here is part of it:
“If you look to the lives of others,
you’ll always find yourself lacking.
Look instead at what you have,
and be grateful.
Reduce your needs,
and be content.
And your life of striving
for perfection, for the future,
will become a life of balance,
of the moment, of inner peace.”
Remember I mentioned that most of our things are in two storage units and we are temporarily living in an apartment? I was so excited to have just the basic necessities, at least for the summer, and yet it turns out that I still brought too much. I know kids don’t need much to have a good time, but we also somehow keep aquiring more toys. Her art supplies alone are a challenge to contain. I’m trying live with the normal signs of day-to-day life and also get rid of the clutter. Since we don’t yet know if we will have another child, I’m hesitant to clear out all the baby clothes and toys, but what about all those items that we are keeping “just in case” we need them? And why do I still have my wedding dress?
